Personalising a Ring

The idea behind a graduation ring is a simple one: an authentic, autobiographical piece of jewellery that is classically designed to be a modern heirloom – allowing the wearer to express something highly personal to the world. Put simply, a graduation ring should transcend the age of the wearer – to ensure this we will never give up quality customisation – that is why we hope you will agree with us that being given the freedom to choosing a stone, or a metal, is like choosing the words in a story: personal, authentic and inspiring.

When you are buying for the long-haul, it’s important to choose a shape with enduring appeal. We’ve worked hard to ensure that all of the designs are clean-lined and classic, so they do exactly this and are practical enough to be worn day-to-day.

The Seal and Signet rings are the true timeless classics – with a design that spans cultures and centuries. If you find a stone is the mark of life well-lived, then an Imperial ring or a Band might be an inspired choice. But there is also enough variation in-between to find something you will be comfortable wearing.

Read on to find out everything you need to know before you customise your ring:

1

_

Choose the design: Which design should you go for? Our best advice is to consider the style that suits your lifestyle. All the rings are wearable in both informally and in a work environment. The band ring is probably the most versatile and discreet and the easiest to pare with the other jewellery or accessories you might wear. The Seal and Signet are timeless and widely adopted by those looking to tell stories and inspire with their jewellery. Finally, the Imperial is built around a gemstone – a concept that has an ancient charm that somehow combines the raffish with the traditional.

2

_

Choose the metal: We only make in precious metals (silver, gold and platinum by special request) so you don’t have to worry about your piece lasting a life time. It will. That said, it is always best to pick a metal that speaks eloquently to your personal style. There is no way of getting around the fact that gold is expensive. Though worth every penny, it is definitely an emotional investment as well as being a lifestyle choice. We make pieces in 9ct, 14ct and 18ct yellow, rose or white gold. If you don’t want to budget for it or simply don’t care for gold, have no fear our silver collections offer quality custom-made pieces at a nice price and are beautiful to behold.

3

_

Make the design your own: You’ve halfway there, now it is time to outfit your ring with the special details. Depending on the design you have chosen – this is the opportunity to celebrate your degree initials and year of graduation or use our bespoke options to add your own poetic allusions.

4

_

Choose the finger size: This needn’t be bewildering. Once you have decided which finger you are going to wear the ring on most often, you can use an existing ring you own to work out your size or you can order a ring sizer directly from us. How you closely you follow the conventional dictums when wearing the ring is entirely up to you. You can uphold convention and equally you can challenge it. If you are stuck have a look at our guide. It is also worth bearing in mind that often we can resize a ring for you – if in the future you want to change way you wear it.

5

_

Finally, add the inscription: We offer a complimentary engraving service on all of the pieces in our graduation ring collection. The simple carefully chosen dedication can make a ring a beautiful and heart-felt possession. That said, a simple date is sometimes enough. Just think of the Romantic poet Lord Byron. When he wanted to mark his swimming of the Hellespont (in a personal best of one hour and ten minutes) he chose a gold ring inscribed on the inside with “May 3 1810” the day of his swim and set with an onyx cameo of an image from Greek mythology.

The Story of Annotated’s Education Collaboration

Originally created by three friends at the University of Oxford looking for a different, but elegant way to celebrate and cherish their undergraduate memories,

This project goes back to the beginnings of the small design studio that preceded our company.

Since those earliest days, Annotated has stood for the idea that, by making things well, we could imbue our products with a sense of soul. You can feel it the moment you touch one of our Signet rings.

And being the children of university lecturers and teachers it was natural for us to combine this with the notion of celebrating education and studying for its own sake.

Over the years, the Annotated graduation ring has become our definition of one-of-a-kind and bespoke: completely made-to-order in collaboration with its owner and crafted by hand from precious metals.

Whether a graduand is someone who typically is interested in fine jewellery or not.

Please note, custom-made items cannot be returned but can be cancelled within seven days of order confirmation when production is still at an early stage.
